Honoring the Life of Officer McKeithen

This week, the Mississippi Gulf Coast tragically lost one of our Biloxi Police Officers at the hands of senseless violence.

Surrounded by the Mississippi House delegation, I was able to lead the House Chamber in a moment of silence, honoring the life and sacrifice of Officer Robert McKeithen.

Officer Robert McKeithen’s end of watch was on May 5, 2019, when he was killed in the line of duty less than an hour after helping a Biloxi man out of his wrecked car. McKeithen was an Air Force veteran who served our Biloxi Police Department for nearly 24 years. He was a family man who leaves behind a wife and children. During his time as an officer, McKeithen became known for his selfless acts to put those in our community first. Particularly, he was awarded the Medal of Valor for his heroic actions during Hurricane Katrina where he went out of his way to save the lives of a family trapped in their home while the flood waters were rising.

We have come to expect our law enforcement officers to run to the dangers we civilians run from. They choose to keep our families and neighborhoods safe never knowing if they will return home to their own families when their shift ends.

Our community now comes together in a time of grief, mourning the loss of our fallen hero.

Supporting our Gold Star Families
This week, I cosponsored legislation to provide tax relief for the children of Gold Star families who have lost a parent serving in the military.

Those who have lost a spouse or parent who served in our military do not deserve to endure any additional hardships. By correcting this problem, we can provide relief for our Gold Star families who have already braved some of life's most challenging moments. As a member of our nation's military, I know that our Armed Forces would not be able to fulfill their missions without the love and support of their families. Congress should act to provide relief for our Gold Star families.

Congressional Art Competition Winner
I'd like to congratulate Skylar for her hard work and exceptional talent at capturing the Marion County Courthouse perfectly. She was selected by our judges as this year's Congressional Art Competition winner.  I know her drawing will impress the millions of visitors able to see it on display in the Capitol. I would like to thank everyone who submitted artwork into this year's competition as well as our judges who selected this year's winner.
