| Local Control for Local School Success |
| |
|
Friends,
One of the most direct investments we can make in our nation's future is in our children and their education. I believe that means empowering parents and local schools by giving them choices and the tools they need to set standards.
Last week I supported passage of the Student Success Act. This legislation takes much of the power back from the overreaching No Child Left Behind law, and restores that power to the states and local school systems. It removes some of the overbearing federal requirements and unfunded mandates that NCLB placed on teachers and schools, and rejects a one-size-fits-all model. The bill also protects states from being pressured to adopt controversial "Common Core" standards and includes an amendment promoting school choice for parents and students in failing districts.
As we work to improve Mississippi schools and prepare students for success, I will also continue working on behalf of college students stuck with the uncertainty of rising loan rates. I am pleased to report that the Senate is expected to act this week to embrace a student loan fix similar to the one I supported in the House earlier this year. That means long-term, market-based reforms that students and parents can depend on.
As always, I'd love to hear from you. You can connect with my office using my website, joining my facebook page, or following me on twitter.
In Your Service,
Congressman Steven Palazzo
