"An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us"

Wednesday morning, a senseless act of violence took place against Members of Congress and their staff as they were practicing for the Congressional baseball game, and annual bi-partisan charity event.  It was a sad day on Capitol Hill as we worried about our colleagues and friends, and most of all a sad day for our country.

I truly thank God for the brave Capitol Police officers who put their lives on the line to protect us not just this morning, but every single day. Speaker Ryan said it best: “An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us." My prayers are with my good friend Steve Scalise, the staffers, supporters, and officers who were injured in this attack, as well as their families. I wish them the best for a speedy recovery.

Despite Wednesday's tragedy, we went forward and played the Congressional Baseball game last night. Members of Congress took the field and staff and community supporters filled the Nationals Park--24,000 strong.  I was glad to be able to share this experience once again with my son as we cheered on our Mississippi friend Congressman Trent Kelly. It’s often easy to forget that Members of Congress are elected officials, but also people with families at home that they miss and love deeply.

Before the game we all prayed together on the field, not as Republicans or Democrats, but as Americans. The Republican team didn’t win last night’s game, but everyone left with their heads held high and happy to take part in one of America’s greatest pastimes.

I hope you and your family have a safe and blessed weekend.

In your service,

Steven M. Palazzo
