Washington, DC - Congressman Steven Palazzo (MS-4) released the following statement today after voting to pass the Fiscal Year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA):
"I've always understood that my number one constitutional responsibility in Congress is to provide for the common defense of this nation, and today's bill upholds that commitment. The NDAA maintains key national security priorities and will provide our armed forces with the tools they need to complete their missions and return home to their families safely.
"We are continuing progress on securing our border, rebuilding our military and restoring its readiness, as well as providing pay increases to our military members. South Mississippi is a major defense hub and we will continue bolstering our national security with passage of this bill."
Key Provisions in the FY20 NDAA
$738 billion for base and overseas contingency operations
Supports the acceleration of weapons development and purchases
$265 million for National Guard equipment
Authorizes construction of three Arleigh Burke-class destroyers
Includes provision for a new frigate
Provides three unmanned surface vessels for the Navy
Includes language to construct a new landing platform/dock (LPD) and a landing helicopter assault (LHA)
3.1% pay raise - largest pay raise in a decade
Extends special pay and bonuses for service members
Takes steps to remedy child care waitlist backlongs at military bases
Includes overhaul of privatized military housing by including a new Tenant Bill of Rights
Repeals the Widow's Tax for surviving military spouses
Requires reports on suicides among military members and calls for the incorporation of chaplains, houses of worship, and spiritual resources for service members struggling with suicidal thoughts
