Palazzo Cosponsors Bipartisan Bill to Provide Tax Relief for Gold Star Families
Washington, DC - Congressman Steven Palazzo (MS-4) has cosponsored legislation to provide tax relief for the children of Gold Star families who have lost a parent serving in the military.
"Those who have lost a spouse or parent who served in our military do not deserve to endure any additional hardships. By correcting this problem, we can provide relief for our Gold Star families who have already braved some of life's most challenging moments. As a member of our nation's military, I know that our Armed Forces would not be able to fulfill their missions without the love and support of their families. Congress should act to provide relief for our Gold Star families." Currently, surviving spouses are eligible to receive survivor benefits from both the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs, however, they are not able to receive these benefits at the same time. Because of this provision, spouses often sign the taxable DoD benefits in their child's name, moving the taxable benefits into a bracket known as the "kiddie tax." Once amended, the tax code would implement a retroactive fix on the "kiddie tax" for Gold Star families. Click here for full bill text. ### |
