Washington, DC - Congressman Steven Palazzo (MS-4) released the following statement after President Trump committed his Administration's support to protect American shipbuilders by upholding the Jones Act which mandates ships moving between American ports to be American-crewed, American-owned, American-built, and American-flagged.

"As a staunch advocate for America's maritime industries, I fully believe our President is right to make this commitment. This was a crucial decision that will provide continued protection and support for our country's national defense and security. The Jones Act has remained the law of the land for nearly a century, and to this day ensures thousands of high-paying jobs are sustained throughout the nation while assuring we will not become dependent on foreign nations for our shipping and transportation needs. I applaud President Trump's decision to put America's maritime industries first," Palazzo said

In March, Palazzo led a group of his House colleagues in a letter to the President expressing opposition to temporarily waiving the Jones Act. This letter followed proposals to issue federal waivers of the Jones Act.

As a member of the House Appropriations Homeland Security subcommittee, Palazzo has held numerous discussions with military officials on the importance of the Jones Act for America's economic and national security.
