Washington, DC - Congressman Steven Palazzo (MS-4) issued the following statement after President Trump delivered his State of the Union Address to the Nation.
"Tonight was another historic night for our country. President Trump delivered a message of bipartisan unity and reminded us that America can choose to be great. I believe we are at a turning point in our nation's history and this time is an opportunity for us to choose greatness.
"Recently, we've seen focus on America's immigration debate move to the spotlight. I echo the President's determination to end illegal immigration in this country. We've experienced an increase of illegal activities along the southern border, which is harmful to our communities and our way of life. I will continue advocating for more resources being sent to our southern border to tackle the humanitarian and security crisis in front of us. I remain committed to prioritizing the safety and security of our citizens, and ensuring that we do not fail the American people on the promise of securing our borders.
"Under President Trump's leadership, Republicans in Congress passed the most historic tax reform bill that made our tax code flatter and fairer so it could work for, and not against, the American people. Since we passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, we've seen more than 5.3 million jobs created and record unemployment levels for African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Asian Americans. We are bringing jobs that went overseas back to our country and providing new opportunities to all Americans.
"Another key point the President drove home was the need to lower health care costs in our country. Since the President has taken office, drug prices have dropped. It's now the duty of our Congress to match that effort with smart policy that works for patients. We need to foster competition that helps drive the cost of healthcare and prescription drugs down. Since Obamacare was passed into law, health care has become unaffordable with limited choices. It's time we address this issue and provide relief to our American families.
"One thing in particular resonated with me, that when we work together we unlock America's extraordinary potential. It is time for both parties to set partisan and personality politics aside and work together to put America first."
