Washington, DC- The House Committee on Homeland Security today approved H.R. 1417, the Border Security Results Act of 2013, including a measure sponsored by Congressman Steven Palazzo (R-MS) that recognizes past National Guard contributions and incorporates lessons learned from previous Guard Missions in future border security strategy. The bill was approved in committee with bipartisan support.
“The amendment I offer today will ensure that the Department of Homeland Security incorporates lessons learned from our past efforts using the National Guard along the border,” Palazzo stated. “The Guard has proven to be an invaluable resource. It only makes sense to consider their past performance as we shape the future strategy for border security.”
Today’s amendment was the third Palazzo provision added to the bill. Two other amendments were previously adopted in the Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security. The first amendment would require the Department of Homeland (DHS) to raise the bar on the acceptable amount of operational control along U.S. borders. The other Palazzo measure would require DHS to outline how it will work to prevent terrorist border crossings and weapons of mass destruction from coming into the country.
The bill is sponsored by House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul and was amended and passed out of committee today with bipartisan support. It is expected to be considered on the House floor later this Congress.
